Aussie Photography - themed competition Architecture - weekly 21st October

Voted most popular image against the architecture theme. This is an image of the War Memorial in Canberra where I tried to imbue mindfulness around symmetry and the beauty and meaningfulness of the structure respecting those bravely fallen to protect country. Image constructed in the afternoon light.

Australian Photographic Society - Contemporary Group Exhibition Co-Winner

Happy to report I have been advised I am co-winner of the APS 2022 Contemporary Group Exhibition - topic Mundane. The image is below and my ARTIST’S STATEMENT follows.:

Image title - UPWARD Stairs are a mundane, and a not uncommon occurrence in our day-to-day life. Yet they can imbue symbolic meaning beyond their simple geometric structure. They reflect cohesion, psychological groundedness and a means of moving upward (in life).

Contemporary photography is an interesting genre and can be open to interpretation. One definition is : “Contemporary photography could be described as a photograph from our own time, compared to an image from a much earlier period. ... Instead, it is a reference to an image created that reflects our values, challenges and perceptions today or, in reference to a contemporaneous period for that image”. LOCAL MORDIALLOC COASTAL

Living local in Mordialloc, Melbourne offers opportunities for coastal photography. There are sometimes dramatic, cloud skies in and around the Mordialloc pier. Here is a recent image around sunset towards the pier when fisherman and women begin to undertake their activity under dramatic skies.

A few years ago when travel was more freely available I travelled to Scotland and was shown the wonders of the Scottish landscape and the Highlands by extended family there. A big shout out to them and huge thank you for a wonderful experience. This image of Stob Dearg was recently sold at an artshow in the Mornington Peninsula.

Werribee South River

Using a Drone for Photography allows one to obtain a very different perspective. This image of market gardens adjacent to the Werribee South river was chosen by the Victorian Drone Flyers Facebook group for their April cover.

Colours and photography

Colour, like light, can be a critical element in photography. Both can affect mood or contribute to geometric form. Here, as February draws to a close, is an image, semi-abstract in form, utilising essentially only one colour - yellow.

CONTEMPLATION AT THE CLIFFS

A side-benefit of being locked down in Melbourne has been the greater exploration and knowledge one gains with respect to one’s local area. Black Rock is an iconic bayside Melbourne location with imposing cliffs. It is popular with those seeking a sunset or general cliffside vista view.

FINALIST - Mullins Conceptual Photography Prize 2021

Happy to be one of a number of finalists in this Conceptual Photography Prize. Hanging by a Thread - Nature is characterised by its fragility, yet pervasive interactivity. Its equilibrium can be undermined and disturbed so easily by human intervention. With a greater understanding of nature’s nuances, mankind can learn to co-exist in harmony.
